Where It All Began: The Vision Behind M1 Goalkeeping

Goalkeeping has always been about much more than making saves.

The position demands courage, composure, resilience, leadership, and the confidence to make decisions in moments where there is often nowhere to hide. That belief is at the heart of M1 Goalkeeping and the reason our founder, Phil Michailides, created M1 in the first place.

From the beginning, the goal was to create an environment where young goalkeepers could be challenged while still feeling supported — a place where athletes could learn, grow, and make mistakes without being afraid of them.

That philosophy eventually became the foundation of what we call The M1 Five:

Together, these five areas guide our approach to developing the complete modern goalkeeper. But M1 has never been only about technical development. Behind every pair of gloves is a young person, and their confidence, character, relationships, and enjoyment of the game matter just as much as their performance on the field.

More Than Coaches

Every M1 coach has experienced the goalkeeper position themselves.

We understand the pressure that comes with being the last line of defence, the responsibility of making decisions in crucial moments, and the unique challenges that goalkeepers experience throughout their development.

That is why we want our coaches to become more than instructors.

Through meaningful relationships and mentorship, we aim to give our athletes people they can trust — coaches who understand the position, challenge them to improve, and support them throughout their development journey.

One Goalkeeper Community

Goalkeepers may compete for different clubs, wear different colours, and play at different levels, but they share an experience that few other players fully understand.

M1 was created to bring those goalkeepers together.

We want athletes from across the soccer community to train together, share experiences, support one another, and build relationships beyond their individual teams.

Goalkeeping can sometimes feel like an isolated position. At M1, we want every goalkeeper to know that they are part of a larger community.
